Surrounded by completely flat, open, treeless saltbush plains, Hay has a number of historic buildings, including the Hay Gaol Museum (1879) and the interesting Bishop's Lodge (1888) with its magnificent nineteenth-century garden. Hay has several sandy river beaches for swimming, boating, canoeing, waterskiing and fishing. A few kilometres east of Hay is a box tree bearing the markings of explorer Charles Sturt.
